Rise, Red as the Dawn | Red Queen Book Review
Hi guys. I'm sorry I haven't updated my blog for many days. Which is lame considering the fact that I made a promise to myself that I'm never gonna leave this blog unattended. But school happened and life happened and there's no way out which left me no choice but to put my blog aside for a sec and come back when everything has settled.
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo. It's semestral break here in my country and we're supposed to not go to school for a week. (Because it's a break. Ykr?) And because of that little mercy from the heavens, it gave me the chance to devour like a predator over my TBR list which had Red Queen on the top, considering that I was very excited to start with it because of all the hype I’ve seen on the internet.
Laaaaaaaaa. Look at that elegant cover. No books can nail that but this book. Although I'm sorry to break this up to you but pretty covers can be deceiving. Very deceiving.
(NOTE: This review is full of spoilers. And hate. So if you loved this book, I apologize. And please don't kill me *sad face*)
I bought this book last August but I intentionally kept myself from reading it then because I want to save it for the break so that I could focus on reading it without the distraction that school brings. And now that the most awaited break has arrived, I can finally read it with all the liberty in the world. I was so damn excited when I opened this book, thinking that it was special. But as the pages turn, geez, my enthusiasm disappeared into the void.
This book is so damn upsetting. I hate it to the moon and back and I seriously don’t know why. Maybe because the story really did disappoint me or maybe because my friends, who said that this book is praise-worthy and talked about it like it's the best book in the world, heightened my expectations too much that I ended up disappointed as hell. Honestly. I’m not being bitter here XD
The plot. Omg the plot. No novel could ever have the most cliché plot except this book. It's like reading excerpts from The Hunger Games, The Selection, A Thousand Pieces of You, Legend Trilogy, and Red Rising. Totally Red Rising. I swear I’ve read the plot of this book everywhere. Hierarchy in the society, revolutions of the lowly, a relationship between a royal and a peasant, rebellion, and a love triangle that works so badly. The story contributes nothing unique or new in the world of dystopia and sci-fi YA books. There is nothing special about the book. Aveyard is like plagiarizing storylines XD
The writing? It’s unsatisfactory. The story goes so slow it’s like watching Pretty Little Liars. Also, every end of a chapter should give you chills right? Or bomb lines that should make your nerves tingle? But no. Geez. Red Queen gave me nothing that’s supposed to make me thrilled or supposed to make me read more. And the plot twist? The plot twist that everyone praised too much. The plot twist that, they said, had blown their minds. Ha! It was like comedy to me. I was reading the plot twist part with this expression (-_-) plastered on my face. It only gave me reasons to stop caring about what’s going to happen.

The dialogues and conversations seem to have no sense at all (in my opinion, that is). I’ve tried to bail on this book so many times and be like “Fuck this shit. I'm done”. But I thought otherwise because I’d be wasting the money I so did my best to save.
And much more to my disappointment, there's a lot of hype with this book. I don't know why. Maybe because the bunch of people who freaked out over this book don't have The Hunger Games series in their Best-Dystopian-Books-Of-All-Time list. Because no matter how many YA books will be published in this world, no dystopian book could ever overpower the awesomeness THG has.
Now, to the characters. I hate the MC so so much. Mare? Ha. She's a weakling. She's with America in the scale of the weakest main characters in the world of dystopia. Which made me hate the book even more. (I actually hated The Selection series) I honestly thought, before reading the book, that she’s such a bad-ass and a tough girl because of how she was described in plot summaries as the most kick-ass MC of all time. She’s the exact opposite. I hate her with every being of me.
Overall, 1 star. That 1 star is for the beautiful cover on the book. I’m sorry for the full-of-hate review but I think Red Queen deserves it. I'm hoping that no book, in the world of YA, will be like Red Queen.
